5 Important Tips for Avoiding Check Fraud

Checks are one of the oldest forms of sending payments. Though checks have been mostly replaced by digital banking in modern times, checks are still a method of payment that is highly vulnerable to fraud. Check fraud can take many forms but some of the most common methods are counterfeit checks, stolen checks or doctored checks.

Here are five crucial tips to keep in mind for protecting yourself from check fraud when sending money to others:

  • Pay digitally – Reduce the number of checks you send. Consider using Zelle when sending money to family or friends.
  • Use bill pay services – The bank will send a check on your behalf.
  • Use a black gel pen if you do write checks. This type of ink is more difficult to remove.
  • If you need to send a check by mail, use the mailbox inside a USPS facility.
  • Keep your account information safe. Do not share or post your bank account information anywhere publicly. Do not allow websites to save your routing/transit and account number.
